Paramedic Program Receives Accreditation

LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute Paramedic Program Receives National Accreditation

01-26-2011 2:00PM BATON ROUGE- The Louisiana State University Fire and Emergency Training Institute has recently received accreditation for the Emergency Medical Technician- Paramedic program through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP).

The accreditation process ensures that FETI is following national standards and offering its students the finest paramedic education possible. This recognition places FETI as one of only four sites state wide offering accredited EMT-Paramedic education.

“This affirms something we have always known”, comments Jeff Gleason, Director of LSU FETI. “With a national trend towards fire service based EMS, it makes sense that LSU FETI have a strong program to support the Louisiana fire service. The recognition is an exciting development- one which positions our program for the future.”

Graduates of the FETI Paramedic EMS Program are eligible to sit for the National Registry of EMTs practical and written examinations. After successful completion of the examination process, registered paramedics can apply for certification through the Louisiana Bureau of Emergency Medical Services. Since its inception in 2006, FETI’s Paramedic Program has prepared students for employment as paramedics in the fire service, industry and private/public EMS services.

Managing the FETI Paramedic program is M.E. (Eddie) Pyle RN EMT-P. ”Achieving accreditation assures our students have been taught from nationally-recognized standards and guidelines. Students graduating from non-accredited paramedic programs will not be allowed to sit for the National Registry Examination after Jan. 1, 2013”, he comments.

About FETI:

LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute (originally LSU Firemen Training Program) was created by the Louisiana Legislative Act 84 of 1963 "to equip, operate, and maintain an in-service Firemen Training Program." Throughout its history, FETI has served the people of Louisiana, the region and the nation through extensive fire service training programs that encompass instruction, research and public service. The training center is situated on 80 acres of land south of the main LSU campus, with training grounds designed to offer a large variety of fire, rescue and emergency response training.

Louisiana Fire Chiefs Honor FETI Director, Jeff Gleason

In a recent meeting of the state’s fire chiefs, LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute Director Jeff Gleason was honored by having the gathering dedicated to his personal efforts in firefighter education in the state of Louisiana. LSU FETI is Louisiana’s “firefighter college” training over 20000 firefighters per year and certifying responders in disciplines ranging from emergency medicine to chief officer leadership. Gleason acknowledged the honor by recognizing the work of his institute and the work of those who have come before him.

“This award is an honor not just for me, but for all of the LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute. I am blessed to have some pretty good people on my staff- and some pretty-good people who paved the way before me. I am also blessed that Louisiana has a fire service that understands the need for state fire training and supports our efforts.”

The gathering was held in April in Opelousas and attracted over 150 volunteer and professional chiefs.

LSU FETI Assists Neighbors

LSU FETI provided tents and logistics help for the 2nd Annual “Gardere Giveaway”, an outreach mission of several local area churches, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's department and the local medical community. Residents in the area- which happens to be the closest community to FETI- are able to have free medical and dental screenings and pick from an array of items donated by the community.

FETI Instructors Rescue Unconscious Man

LSU FETI Adjunct Instructors Lee Hedgepeth and Rose Rivera rescued an unconscious railroad worker from a confined space on the grounds of Camp Minden.

Hedgepeth, also a firefighter at Bossier Parish Fire District 1, and Rivera, an EMT- Paramedic, worked together to save the railroad worker who lost consciousness while cleaning a tank car previously filled with hydrogen fluoride. Upon arrival with Bossier Parish Fire District #1, the rescuers set up air monitoring in the confined space and found oxygen levels at 7%. Lee and coworkers rigged a 5 to 1 haul system and lowered Lee, in full personal protective equipment, into the tank where he found the victim unconscious but with a heart rhythm. A hasty harness was attached and the victim was removed from the tank car nine minutes after arrival by Hedgepeth and his crew.

The victim was air-lifted to LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport by Air Life rescue.

LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute is investigating firefighter line-of-duty deaths caused by risky behavior on the fireground. The focus of the paper was to examine the influences upon the cognitive decision making processes used by fire fighters.

Jeff Pardue, Curriculum Coordinator for FETI is taking a pedagogical approach to the research to determine why a significant number of fire fighters continue to choose to take unnecessary risks on the fireground. This is the first in a series of papers that seeks to develop new and innovative curriculum programs that addresses preventable line-of-duty deaths.

LSU FETI to host regional fire education summit on Tuesday

US Fire Administrator Kelvin Cochran and Louisiana State Board of Regents for Higher Education Associate Director, Meg Casper to address Louisiana delegation tasked with streamlining fire education initiatives in Louisiana.

Baton Rouge – November 3 – Emergency responders interested in pursuing advanced certifications in firefighting in Louisiana will soon follow the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Program designed by the U.S. Fire Administration. This program will provide Louisiana emergency providers a path for professional development and support in reaching individual higher education goals. This new model will be announced at the November 10th FESHE Education Summit on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.

State colleges and fire organizations have been meeting for the past year in preparation for this summit. By combining state resources, aligning curricula, and developing non-traditional learning methods such as distance education, the ranks of Louisiana emergency responders holding advanced certifications is expected to increase.

PIne Country Hosts Successful Fire Investigator Class

(Baton Rouge) The LSU FETI Pine Country campus recently completed a 40 hour fire investigator class. The course was well attended by firefighters from Bossier, Claiborne, DeSoto, Lincoln, and Webster parishes. Pine Country manager Nick Palmer is excited to report that the class was completely filled. “I believe this is a sign that the word is spreading around north Louisiana that Pine Country is a viable training option for local departments.” says Palmer.

Firefighters praised the efforts of the Pine Country staff:

BATON ROUGE- The Louisiana State University Fire and Emergency Training Institute will host the 2009 North American Fire Training Directors conference September 22 to September 24, 2009 at the Lod Cook Conference Center on the campus of LSU.

NAFTD membership is comprised of state fire training directors of each of the fifty states and all Canadian provinces and territories, NAFTD members serve as the primary point of contact for fire training and education conducted across the United States and Canada. Each year the NAFTD membership provides training to over one million firefighters ranging from basic entry level fire fighting instruction to professional development courses for chief fire officers.

Jeff Gleason, Director of LSU FETI and his staff have been working for the past year planning for this year’s gathering.

“We are pleased and honored to have the opportunity to host this group of state fire training directors who all have similar missions of providing quality training and education to our nation’s firefighters. This conference provides a forum for the directors to exchange new ideas, methods and technologies that will enhance their training organizations to produce safer, more efficient and effective fire and emergency responders.”

Pine Country Announces Classes

The FETI/ Pine Country Campus in Minden, Louisiana will be starting a EMT course beginning September 10 and ending December 16th.

A Municipal Fire School will be held on September 18th beginning at 6:30pm and on September 19th, beginning at 8:00am. The course will cover driver training, lpg burns, maze, and live structural burns.

FETI Host Vehicle Extrication Class for St.Tammany #1

Baton Rouge- LSU FETI taught a four-day vehicle extrication class to the St. Tammany Fire District 1 in Slidell, La. FETI staff helped eleven firefighters work through several extrication scenarios- beginning with the basics and progressing to more involved evolutions. Students worked through cribbing exercises, practiced proper glass removal, removed doors with cutting and spreading tools and safely removed a roof on an inverted vehicle.

LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute Lead Instructor Rusty Lenard delivered a well received class to enthusiastic students.

“We had some really hot days- but the folks from St.Tammany #1 did an outstanding job. FETI welcomes these types of opportunities to bring training to the Louisiana fire service.”

Throughout its 38-year history, FETI has served the people of Louisiana, the region and the nation through extensive fire service training programs that encompass instruction, research and public service. The institute provides training to paid and volunteer fire service personnel throughout the state. Training is also provided to industrial fire and safety personnel, as well as to other emergency responders. The curriculum ranges from basic fire fighting skills to advanced technical training in rescue and hazardous materials and fire officer training. The duration of courses varies from a three-hour class to a ten week course. Last year, nearly 1,600 courses were delivered with an enrollment of over 25,000 students.

FETI Gains OPITO Accreditation

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute, or FETI, in partnership with Petrofac Training, recently became one of only five institutes worldwide to be accredited by the Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization, or OPITO.

Based in the United Kingdom, OPITO is recognized worldwide as providing definitive emergency and critical response standards in firefighting, survival and leadership. Now accredited to the stringent OPITO standard, FETI has joined a select group of training providers, making the institute a magnet for international fire service training. Furthermore, being the first training course to be launched in the Gulf of Mexico, it is conveniently located for locally-based companies and is a move toward a common global standard to ensure consistency across the oil and gas industry.

To facilitate becoming an OPITO-approved center, FETI partnered with Petrofac Training, a global provider of innovative fire, survival and emergency response education, to deliver a range of courses in emergency response and management. By blending theoretical and practical exercises, students will learn in a safe and controlled environment reflecting situations from both on- and offshore.

Gordon Caird, regional manager of Europe and The Americas for Petrofac Training, said, “Petrofac Training is continually focused on developing competence and minimising risk for its customers. The introduction of the new emergency training course with LSU marks our progress in developing our relations with the university and raising the awareness and understanding of health and safety within the United States.”

Training courses offered by FETI and Petrofac Training include Confined Space Operations, Basic and Advanced Marine Firefighting, Aviation Crash – Fire Rescue, Offshore Helicopter Landing Officer and Offshore HLO Assessments. OPITO accreditation is currently being sought for Offshore Emergency Response Team Member with classes in Heli-deck Firefighting, H2S, Emergency Response Team Leader, Helicopter Landing Officer and more to follow.

FETI Director Jeff Gleason believes the partnership will broaden the training opportunities available for Louisiana industry. “We have been cultivating a relationship with Petrofac over the past few years realizing the potential value of a joint venture,” he said. “Together, with their knowledge of the offshore industry and our expertise in fire training, the petrochemical companies in the Gulf of Mexico could provide better safety for their workers. The OPITO accreditation will make the Petrofac-LSU training partnership attractive to the offshore oil and gas industry worldwide.”

The process for OPITO accreditation is stringent. Over the past two years, Eddie Tessmer, manager for the FETI Marine program, and Petrofac staff have been working to demonstrate the readiness of LSU FETI.

“It has been a demanding task to get to this point, but the goal is in sight,” said Tessmer. “It has taken a great deal of teamwork and dedication for us to reach this point and we plan to continue that dedication by delivering quality programs to our students.”

By offering courses approved by OPITO, LSU FETI is able to provide the Louisiana offshore oil and gas companies the safest and most relevant curriculum industry has to offer. LSU FETI is currently registering students for these courses.

Bogalusa Firefighters Tackle Haz-Mat Course

Instructors from the LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute were in town recently to offer the Bogalusa Fire Department its annual hazardous materials refresher course.

The firefighters who attended the training are all members of the Bogalusa Emergency Response Team (BERT). Eleven are certified haz-mat technicians, five are certified in haz-mat operation, three are certified in high angle rope rescue and confined space rescue, and two are certified in swift water rescues.

Additionally, one team member is a paramedic and one is an EMT. All members of the team are National Fire Protection Association-certified firefighters and first responders. This year’s haz-mat course covered how to handle different types of emergencies prompted by chlorine, a chemical commonly used to treat water, but which can take the form of a poisonous gas or can cause an explosion when in proximity to other chemicals such as ammonia.

The team spent a day working with props, brought by LSU that were designed to simulate different types of chlorine storage tanks, and “responding” to various types of potential chlorine-involved emergencies.

Members of BERT train regularly to both ensure they are able to work effectively while wearing the cumbersome haz-mat protective attire and they know how to deal with the different types of hazardous materials emergencies. The team also handles high angle, confined space and water rescues throughout Washington Parish.

Fire Rates Lowered in Albany, Louisiana

Albany residents will receive a nice surprise in their homeowner’s insurance rates this year — a lower rate. The lower rates are because the fire rating for Livingston Parish Fire Protection District No. 1 has improved from a Class 5 to a Class 4, according to the Louisiana Department of Insurance. That means fire insurance for a home worth $150,000 is likely to go from about $1,500 a year to $1,400 a year, a savings of $100.

Fire protection ratings are done by the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana and are approved by the state Insurance Commissioner. The scale is 1 to 10 with 1 being the best. A key component of a department's rating is the training received by its members. Last year, FETI taught 11 courses to the Albany VFD for a total of 438 training hours.

LSU Fire and Emergency Training Institute to Announce Graduates Baton Rouge, LA- July 27, 2009

The LSU Fire And Emergency Training Institute will be graduating its recruit ﬁreﬁghting class on Friday, July 31 2009, 10:00am at the Dalton Woods Auditorium of the Energy, Coast and Environment Building on Nicholson Drive Extension. The graduation represents a culmination of 620 hours of ﬁre and emergency medical training. The 25 graduates will receive certiﬁcation in Fire Fighter I and II, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, and Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator. They also received First-Responder medical certiﬁcation.

This recruit class began on April 27, 2009. The recruits come to FETI from departments throughout Louisiana. While recruits, most live on the campus of FETI and train to meet the certiﬁcation requirements of their individual departments. Recruit Chief Clay Crain recognizes the hard work and personal dedication each of the recruits demonstrated to make it through the FETI recruit program.

“FETI took a group of dedicated and hard working young men and molded them into ﬁreﬁghters. They have proven to me and to the ﬁre service that they have the skills and abilities to work on the front lines of the ﬁre service in their communities. I am proud of them.”

FETI provides training to paid and volunteer ﬁre service personnel throughout the state. Training is also provided to industrial ﬁre and safety personnel, as well as to other emergency responders. The curriculum ranges from basic ﬁre ﬁghting skills to advanced technical training in rescue and hazardous materials and ﬁre ofﬁcer training. The duration of courses varies from a three-hour class to a 14-week course. Last year, nearly 1,000 courses were delivered with an enrollment of over 20,000 students.
